This post from Sis Rachel Ramos was from 11 months ago, but it reminded
me of something:
> This is so amazing. I just came back from lunch with a friend (really
> shopping) and we stopped at a Wendy's to pick up something for a coworker.
> There was a young girl there who was homeless and she was begging for money
> for some food.
Bro Kevin and I were driving home from something or other with a load
of teenagers in the back of the van. A newcomer transient to Champaign
had parked himself at a busy intersection with a sign indicating he
wanted food (the homeless people in Champaign-Urbana typically hang out
near campus and downtown, where there is easy access to shelters and
idealistic/compassionate college students. Several of the homeless
folks are more-or-less permanent fixtures and on a first-name basis
with plenty of the college kids).
One or two of the teens on the van begin laughing out loud at the
beggar-man, and that kinda struck a nerve in me, so I told Kevin that
I'd buy that man a hamburger after we finished dropping the teens
off. Kevin says, "There's a <burger place>, let's do it right now,"
so we pulled through the drive-through, bought a hamburger and fries
and a cup of ice-water, turned around and gave it to the man, along
with an invitation to an upcoming revival service.
The kids expressed their amazement: "That is soooo cool! We've never
seen anyone do anything like that before!"
The most prominent/largest men's shelter in Champaign-Urbana, BTW, is
run by "Urban Restoration Ministries" which is headed by an Apostolic
minister.
