Sis. Corey:
> I was talking about the fact that no one has to approve
anyone I date except me. It doesn't have to be okay with
my family or anyone else. As long as he and I are equally
yoked, he likes me and I like him, it's cool. We can do a
little something, something.
Me;
My comment was in fun Sis. It was a JOKE.
Sis:
> You can pick whatever you want.
Me:
Aaaah, yeah. This too was an "attempt" at humor. B~)
Sis:
...Everyone perceives things a different way...
Me:
Indeed we do Sis. All we have to go in is what we believe
someone meant but when someone comes out and tells us that
we are wrong in our assumption it is time to let go of the
old idea.
Racism is a reality. It isn't going to go away anytime
soon. It is wroing not to deal with it.
You may get the wrong idea but here goes anyway. When I
was in prison, where *I* suddenly became a member of the
minority, me and two black guys were pulled from a line to
move some metal. This stuff will cut you to ribbons if you
don't handle it right and although these young men were
calling me names and taunting me as well as their out and
out threats, I told them the proper way to handle this
metal. I used to work in a sheet metal shop and for the
record, I wasn't saved yet. When we moved the metal the
guy on the other end grabbed the stuff and sneered at me
and gave the sheet a SHAKE! I just kinda gave this *sick*
stare and said "Look at your hands, man." because they were
covered with cuts of about 1/8 inch deep.
These two men started to apologize (not REALLY bad guys at
all) and when I said that this was an example of how
foolish prejudice is, they looked at me and said in
amazement "How can WE be prejudice, we're black?"
I went on to say that prejudice is the judging/condemnation
of ANYONE by ANYONE ELSE based only upon skin color or any
other "quality."
We cannot bury our heads in the sand about this issue.
there is much misinformation and vain attitudes about this
subject. The weapons we use to pull down Godless
imaginations is TRUTH. Truth doesn't ignore the problem,
neither does it exagerate it. We sometimes have to have
our toes stepped on to deliver it though.
These two guys told me that no white man had ever talked to
them like that before and that they had never looked at it
like that. I said that we weren't all bad, most, but not
all.
I understand that their is much that minorities have to
contend with and there is no excuse on ANY side of this
issue for this behavior.
My point is, and it will hurt, that when it comes to
prejudice we are ALL guilty to some extent and it isn't
what you think it is either.
Where was the prejudice in the situation that your
Grandmother was in? The lady who would not shake your
Grandmother's hand was prejudice ONLY if she would not
shake her hand because she was black. What if this woman
knew all the other women but didn't know your Grandma? It
is a fact that your Grandmother judged all the other women
in the room by the actions of this ONE woman.
My brother has a little "test" of attitudes when it comes
to prejudice and I would like to share it with you all.
I am standing on the shore of a lake and there are two
women in the water drowning. One is black and the other is
white. I dive into the water and swim RIGHT PAST the black
woman and save the white woman. Am I prejudice?
