Bro. Harrell:
> This is not a problem for the couple AT ALL!! This is a
problem that the perpetrator must deal with.
Me:
True, the "sin" is in the perpetrators, but the couple
should be prepared for this. If they have had a relatively
long engagement this shouldn't be much of a problem, but I
think the issue should be addressed.
Bro. Harrell:
> Besides, I get all that treatment anyway, even BEFORE I
was married!!
Me:
I get the same treatment in places, this too should be part
of counseling for marriage. I have a criminal record and
lousy credit, my prospective bride should know these things
too. Worst of all I SNORE! It takes a lot of pressure of
to talk these things through.
Bro. Harrell:
> So if you're saying that they shouldn't be married
because they have to deal with that treatment,...
Me:
You're way out in left field here, I "never" said they
shouldn't marry but that part of "responsible" premarrital
counseling will include the topic of the "additional"
stresses involved.
Bro. Harrell:
...then you're ALSO saying that I shouldn't have been
born...because I deal with that stuff every day!
Me:
You're out of the ballpark here. My stance on racism is
"well" documented.
You:
> I've been called a "nigger" as recent as a couple of
months ago!
Me:
Sorry to hear this. I am. That word hurts me. The major
reason it hurts me is that it is the word that was used for
blacks when I was growing up. I was shocked the first time
I used this word (I was probably 4) and saw the hurt on the
woman's face. She said "I don't blame you child, you only
know what you were taught." I thought the word was the
same as "German" or "Chinese."
I won't say I never used it again but I used when I did use
it it was to intentionally hurt. I don't use the word at
all since I was saved.
Bro. Harrell:
I experience social discrimination almost EVERY WEEK!! I am
ignored in stores ALL THE TIME!! So, what's the problem???
Me:
So do I but I would suspect that you have "more" to contend
with than I. Is that a "racist" statement? The church I
attend is "mostly" blacks and always has been. People ask
me "Do they let any white people attend?"
Sometimes I 'want' to say "No, not a one." but that would
help no one. I smile and say "Come and find out for
yourself."
Bro. Harrell:
If I can deal with it for the past 18 or so years, then the
couple should have no problem with it.
Me:
Many don't have a problem. Some do. I have no problem
with the remarks made to me, some in the church do.
