It's not the duty of the deacons to tell the preacher what to preach. He
should be preaching what God tells him to preach. But the deacons are there
to serve the people. To take care of the physical things, while the
minister takes care of the spiritual things. Neither are there to drive the
people, because God don't need cowboys. He has shepherds. Some deacon
boards are absolutely worthless, because if they disagree with the pastor
at all, they are out of there. There is no way that they can serve...
In the past, I've seen pastors that were drug addicts, committing adultery,
and other sins, but the deacon board could not do anything about it. No one
could call the UPC district and complain, because they don't take
complaints from the people in the church. And from their point of view,
it appeared that everything was going great. Everyone was a cowboy.
