Speaking in tongues

I have a friend who is nondenominational. We started a discussion about
salvation and we got on the subject of the Holy Ghost and speaking in
tongues. He says that his pastor says that tongues has passed away because
in the new testament the spirit was "given out by the laing on of hands."
He also says, "> We don't believe that you need to speak in tongues to
prove the existence of the Holy Spirit being with you<"
I know and you know that this is not true. I have used every scripture I
know of to convince this guy, who is also named Corey, that speaking in
tongues is essential and is the initial evidence of receiving the Holy
ghost. He stated something about him knowing he has God's spirit because
he bears the fruits of the spirit as stated in Galatians 5. He is
interested in finding out more about this and I want to know if anyone
here has anything they can add on to what I have already said. I have
sent him email about why God chose speaking in tongues and why we have
the Holy Ghost and am waiting for him to respond, which will probably be
tomorrow. I don't know if this subject has been discussed before, but if
it has I hope you all don't mind discussing it again.
Thanks,
Corey
