A Riddle

I remember the 10-cent phone call, and the 3-cent postage
stamp for a first class letter, 8 to 10-hour, 5 to 6-day work week.

I now know, at the age of 50 years, the joy of working
11 hours a day on short days and 14 hours a day on
long days with 4 days off a month....every other
weekend.....maybe......if I'm lucky.......all for $1160
per month. That is $290 a week...for three clients.

I am allowed to have three additional clients, but
the clients don't want any more in their group,
despite what the government says is allowable.....I have
a job that is deemed necessary and one of the most
important jobs in the land.....tons of folks need it.
Tons of folks talk about it. Tons of folks say, "but
it is impossible to find a good one."

Present and past clients tell me I have an excellent
one. I have eleven continuous years experience
running this business and thirty years learning this
business, plus mandatory continuing education
commanded by the government.

Yet, I can lose everything I have gained in an instant
on one person's whim, despite working years to attain
the normal things......house, utilities, car, clothes,
shoes and food for my kid. I can go hungry....the kid
needs to eat. The kid is growning.

I have started from scratch in this business 4 times
in the past 11 years, due to a client's whim, not
counting the 2 years it took to get started. In my
business you have to have a track record to gain the
trust of the clients.

How I long to go back to the 10-cent phone call and
the 3-cents postage and only 10 hours a day labor
for just 5-6 days a week. Can you guess what I do?
