American Cancer Society E-mail Chain letters

Greetings Saints in Jesus name!

I don't know what it is today, but it seems like several times today we've
receive postings from folks on H-F wanting us to approve e-mail to be posted
to the list regarding a "very sick little girl" and need for her prayer as
well as a "Tickle Me Elmo" all for the sakes of cancer.

Both recommended to pass the e-mail on to as many persons as humanly possible
as the American Cancer Society will donate $0.03 for each e-mail that has
an e-mail address on it if forwarded to acs@aol.com (or something like that).

Well.... the American Cancer Society was so disturbed by it that they have
a web page ...

       http://www.cancer.org/chain.html

... that shows the basic text of what is received commonly in e-mail and has
stated that ACS has never solicited contributions (let alone give them away)
through e-mail.

Also, the Department of Energy's Computer Incident Advisory Capability has a
web page concerning e-mail chain letters and even has exact duplicates of the
e-mail letters sent in by the good folks of H-F that are all bogus.

The CIAC's Chain letter URL is:

    http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACChainLetters.html

And the CIAC has a E-mail Hoax (difference between a "Hoax" and a "Chain
Letter" as the CIAC defines is the Hoax is a little more vicious. Although
elements of a hoax are often found in chain letters as well) URL is ...

    http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html

Being a good moderator, there's also a link on the H-F WWW Archives at ...

    http://www.elilabs.com/upc/net/higher-fire

.... with a link directly to a page telling about hoaxes (with links to
CIAC's pages) at URL ...

    http://www.elilabs.com/upc/net/higher-fire/EHoaxes.html

I don't know if the season or what ... I just know were getting lots and
lots of e-mail concerning e-mail hoaxes concerning the American Cancer
Society with the request to forward it on to as many as possible as they
(the victim) will benefit by being in the record books, or momey donated
in memorial, etc.

Please stop this.

Personally, I wish we could force everybody that get's a H-F distrubution
to read these two CIAC bulleteins as it should be required reading for
anybody to have an internet e-mail address. Make em read it. Then make
em take a test. That way, when chain letters and e-hoaxes are received,
they can reply to the e-hoax/chain letter with a anti-virus agent of
sorts explaining the hoax in an effort to get "word" back up the chain
to educate folks of their sheer ignorance in forwarding this garbage along.

Thank you very much.
