A standard is the battle flag that goes before the troops in time of
war, and provides something for them to follow. When the battle gets
heated, the soldiers cannot always hear the voice of the commander,
but they can always see the standard (banner) held before them by the
standard bearer (pastor) who relays the commands given to him by the
captain (Jesus). The standard commands the troops by its presence and
by its motions: an upward bob, a left or right twist, a forward
lowering and raising, etc.

Next time you are at a military parade, watch the standard and the
standard bearer who is in front of the marching band. That standard
is how the band company receives its commands telling it what to do,
which way to go, when to advance, and when to wait. Since the band
instruments are so loud, the marching band can not hear the voice of
the captain, but they can always see their standard, and they follow
it.
