It's a "religious" thing. LINUX is a Unix-like operating system which
runs on (among many other things) your standard 386/486/Pentium PC-type
hardware. Some (not all) people who run Linux, especially zealous new
converts, typically have (IMHO) an elitist attitude toward the masses
who run consumer-oriented operating systems like (gasp!) Windows95.
Microsoft is considered bad because the computer-world is apparently
overrun with communists who hate the idea that a college drop-out is
making more money than them.
I personally don't care what O.S. people run. I have a Silicon
Graphics machine running IRIX 5.3 or 6.2 (depending on which disk I
boot) on my desk. Sitting next to me is a Pentium with DOS and
Win3.11. My PC at home (when I get it replaced) will have Win95. I
*might* put Linux on it also just for the fun of it, though I do have
some other spare operating systems laying around in their boxes doing
nothing (SCO, Solaris, NeXT, WinNT, maybe even an old copy of UnixWare
somewhere). I also think Bill Gates has done a pretty good job of
popularizing computers.
The H-F mailing list runs on a Sparcstation running Solaris 2.5. The
H-F archives live on Bro Brown's machine, which runs Linux. About the
only modern desktop-machine O.S. I don't have much experience with is
anything running on Macintosh, though I did run a computer lab
populated with Macs and Apple II's when I was in college.
Anyway, when it comes to computers I'm a universalist -- the right tool
for the right job.
