The scumbag tax-collectors and other sinners realized their inadequacy
before the Lord. They accepted John's baptism of repentance and were
open to God's plan for their lives.
The righteous, religious people, on the other hand, did not feel they
needed baptism. They were already saved, so why bother going through
the trouble of getting wet? As the Word says, they rejected God's
purpose for themselves because of this attitude.
We may also apply this to ourselves: Lord, don't let us get so
"religious" and arrogant that we feel that we no longer need to repent
and to humble ourselves before You! We still need a Savior!
