We had our Home Schooling review with the local Board of Ed lately.
They expressed envy of our ability to reach consistent and real
standards. When asked for help in finding good grammar resources,
particular sentance diagramming and usage rules the general concensus
was "We dont teach that anymore ... the teachers would like to have
such a book. If you find one, let us know".
They emphasized the great "Mastery Tests" that the state has been
involved in, and recommended their use. But when asked for the critera
for achievement on the tests, there was no concrete asnwer except for
"creativity".
Somehow, I think that the actual critera for writing would be:
1. Include some negative reference to white males OR police of any
color, and a positive reference to one of the following:
a. female, any color.
b. Russian, or former communist
c. Native American
d. Kids with abusive and strict parents
e. black, spanish or rock musician
f. homosexual or bisexual
2. Mention something green being hurt, or picture a loaded gun in the
hands of an angry resentful religious man, or for 2 more points,
someone who thinks they know Jesus Christ.
3. Use the words fetal tissue or condom
4. The kids save the day in the end, and expose the nasty motives of a
parent, or government offical.
5. Make animals talk and show more sense than the antogonists (white
male, or authority figure, such as a preacher).
6. Mention aliens in conjunction with toxic waste. (i.e. if human
beings get the gong, its because they deserved it)
7. Spell any words over 5 letters creatively.
Just kidding. :-|
