This was the case when I used the word in question. I had
*no* idea of the rather disgusting alternative meaning of the
word. If I was aware of the other meaning, I would not have
used that word.
I do have a humorous story regarding cultural differences in
langauge. Sister "S" -- a member of the church I attended in
Fort Worth TX -- is a Registerd Nurse working at a hospital
near Fort Worth. One of her coworkers mentions that she got
her husband some suspenders for his birthday.
Sis S exclaims in surprised shock "Suspenders for your
husband?! Well, if that's what you want to do that's fine,
but keep it to yourself please!"
Sis S's (American) husband later explained that the co-worker
was referring to what the British call "braces" -- clothing
accesories that go over the shoulders to hold a man's pants
up. To the Brit, "suspenders" are a woman's garter belt.
