Bro. Watson,
Thanks for a brillant expose' on 'chicken cussin'. I have to work in a
oil field office
atmosphere, and have heard most every expression used,(chicken or
otherwise).
The common opinion in the world is,"everybody talks this way" or "if you
don't
like it, don't listen." In most cases, I can control the talk,(in my
office & shop)
and usually it is an all male group. What I will not tolerate is someone
using
language that they KNOW offends me or my family......( if my family is
present.)
This type of cussing is used for shock value, just to impress/shock
somebody.
More than once I have left my parents home because of my unsaved dad's
mouth, to prevent my children from picking up 'bad' words from a
respected
authourity figure. I don't want my child using language that grates on my
spirit,
just because they have heard it from a teacher, grandparent, preacher, or
other AUTHORITY FIGURE. This tells them "SO and SO said it so it's OK".
I too have heard respected ministers use a expletive in an example,
and also
in a SHOCK value type way. It is hard to hear a sermon when you mentally
block
out words normally heard in the oil field.
Chicken cussin has the same effect on our friends. They see what
we're saying, but hear what we're meaning. Here in West Texas, the norm
is to use
TEX-MEX, a blend of Spannish and English, to disguise any "dirty words".
(like this makes it OK)haha
Yours in Christ,
