At this point in time, let me recommend NetMeeting by Microsoft. It is
a Internet Explorer accompanying application (though it will run
independantly) and it is a free download from Microsoft now, as is IE
3.0. Check http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download/ for both products.
NetMeeting does awsome stuff. It allows conferencing like the old
"PowWow", but in a technically excellent format. It provides audio,
shared applications (i.e. sharing of screens and apps for the various
participants), a whiteboard, a textual chat window for supliment or
for those without audio.
Video is coming I understand, or already implement with hardware which
I dont yet have.
Last night, realizing this I started making serious plans to set up a
mechanism to teach Home Bible studies via the net, with charts and
everything. I have a number of Bible studies which are already
digitized and would be completely suited for this.
Alternately, music conferences and sharing of sheet music, or even
midi online is a right NOW thing if someone wanted to coordinate it.
We've been doing IRC for a while, but I think that this will supercede
the IRC arena for effective and meaningful communication.
Get it before the Government gets involved after NetScapes appeal to
the feds to drop bombs on Gates ... (fat chance!)
