It seems to me that your have just given a good working definition of
sin: an offense unto God.  

I find it hard to uphold the precept that it is not a sin to smoke
cigarettes.  I know you did not say it was not a sin, only that this
man said that the Lord did not say that it was a sin.

Just trying to clarify things a bit...
