That's for trademarks, isn't it? i.e. "escalator" came into such
common usage for those moving stairway things (what is the generic
name?) that it became a generic term for those and lost the trade
mark protection.

AFAIK, no evidence is required to indicate that you attempted to
protect your copyright, though things like registration help when/
if it comes time to prove ownership.  But I'm a computer hack, so
I only know just enough about copyrights to be dangerous.
