Yes, fasting is a requirement which Jesus said his disciples would do.
In Mt 9:14-15, Mk2:18-19 and Lu 5:33-34, Jesus was asked by the
religious people why his disciples did not fast. Jesus told them that as
long as Jesus was with them in body they didn't need to fast but once he
went away they would have to fast. Fasting is also needed in casting
out certain devils. In Mt 17:14-21, a man came to Jesus' disciples to get
them to cast out an unclean spirit which had his son bound. The
disciples could not do it - Jesus told them "..this kind goeth not out but by
prayer and fasting." Fasting puts to death the flesh [natural man's]
desires and allows your inner man to be more alert to the voice of Jesus.
Elijah was fasting when he went to Mount Horeb and he was able to
hear that "still small voice".
Jesus himself fasted often. When he began his ministry the first thing he
did was fast and pray for 40 days and 40 nights; he used the Word
against Satan each time Satan tempted him and defeated Satan. When
he came out of the wilderness, he was walking in power - all the imps in
Hell knew who he was and they were subject to him.
I believe in order for God's people to be prepared for these last and evil
days - Fasting is one of the major things we will need to do to keep
under our bodies. Paul fasted often. The "old" nature has to be
crucified. It must be denied what it wants and washed cleaned by the
Word. Fasting helps us to put on Christ. It puts you into the spirit realm
and you can hear the voice of God. It helps you to become sensitive to
Jesus and what he wants to do through you.
