This is a common confusion regarding tongues. The GIFT of tongues is 
given to some and not to others. But this GIFT is seperate from the 
tongues given as evidence when receiving the Holy Ghost.
Study Acts 2,10 and 19. They illustrate that the infilling of the Holy 
Ghost is evidenced by speaking in tongues. The recipient may never speak 
in tongues again after that.
The best proof is what happens every day around the world - people get 
filled with Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues!
What really let me know it was real was when my wife received the 
Spirit. She assured me that she would NEVER stand at the front of a 
church and begin talking in an unknown language, because she is VERY 
shy. When I saw & heard her speaking in tongues at the alter one evening 
I knew beyond any doubt it HAD to be real! Praise God!
