Shalom Higer-Fire,

><snip> There actually was a
>revolt led by Judas Maccabeus to rid Jerusalem of the "abomination of
>desolations" found in the temple - i.e. the enemy general (I forget his
>name, but would recognize it if someone could help me remember) had set up
>his pagan images in the temple and had defiled all of the holy objects -
>except *one* day's worth of oil in a holy lamp.

King Antiochus Epiphanes IV of Syria in 165 B.C.E.

If I remember, the abomination referred also to pig being sacrificed as
well, though
the passage below doesn't mention that, there is also the question of
dual fulfillment
and prophecy in Daniel and the NT ("abomination of desolation").

Lot's of web descriptions, this one is pretty good..

Actually, I think the Chanukah Menorah miracle details are from the Talmud,
not in the Book of Maccabees.

ON LIGHTING THE CHANUKIAH:
Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Shabbat, page 21b

What is the reason for Chanukah? <snip> For when the Greeks entered the Temple,
they defiled all the oils in it, and when the Hasmonean dynasty prevailed
against
and defeated them, they [the Hasmoneans] searched and found only one cruse
of oil which possessed the seal of the High Priest, but which contained
sufficient
oil for only one day's lighting; yet a miracle occurred there and they lit
[the lamp]
for eight days. The following year these days were appointed a Festival
with the
  recitation of Hallel and thanksgiving.

Also worthy of note...
Chanukah is mentioned more in the NT than Tenakh (OT)

John 10:22
And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.

Feast of Dedication is the dedication of the Temple, Chanukah :-)
