Dear Brothers and Sisters:
This subject strikes very close to home and my husbands income. My
husband is the Operations Manager and a DJ at a contemporary
christian music station owned and operated by an AoG church. Most of
the programming is contemporary in sound. On Friday night they have
several hours of "alternative christian" and on Saturday they have
several hours of "christian rock". The so-called christian rock is
definitely in the sound area of heavy metal.
My husband and I are very offended by these two time periods of
programming. The Board of Directors, which is entirely AoG, doesn't
particularly like this programming either. I have been on my way
home (it takes 30 minutes) on Saturday night and thought my radio had
gone bonkers. I couldn't believe that "our" radio station could be
playing something that sounded so terrible. The subject of removing
this programming has been talked about but there are many in the
"college" town that believe that we have people who want and need to
hear this music.
The words of all music needs to be the deciding factor on the
category of the music. There are many songs that are not christian
being categorized as such. There are also many songs out there that
fall into other categories that are christian.
Is "christian" music only songs of praise and worship? Is there
music that is not praise and worship that can be called christian
because it is the type of lyrics that we would choice to listen to
and have our children listen to?
Bottom line is that I ask your prayers for my husband. Being UPC and
working for AoG can be like walking a tight rope sometimes. My
husband has been asked twice to be the station manager and has had to
turn it down because the station manager must attend and be a member
of the AoG church. We are happy in our home church and believe this
is where we are suppose to be. It hurts and is sometimes
frustrating that only the fact of where we go to church decides my
husbands job title and pay. The station is suppose to be a
non-denominational station.
