Sounds like the comments wre really directed to the church...

Some of us WERE fags, some were whackos and liars, and creeps. In
fact, it wasnt nice then, and it isnt nice now, but the grace of God
cleaned up some fags, and made us saints, Praise GOD!

Seems a good contrast to me: 

* Saint BY the grace of God, 

* Creep (or f, or t, or q) without.

Big time contrast.
