I switched my 386/20 over to Unix SVR3.2 from Interactive Systems
Corporation (ISC) in 1989 as sson as it became available for PCs.
This was the port of Unix from USL (AT&T) originally done for the Sun
386 machine. Sun contracted USL to port Unix to the 386, and USL
subcontracted ISC to actually do the work. All the other 386 Unixes
for several years (except Xenix) were derived from this port. ISC was
later bought by Sun and became Sunsoft, the authors of Solaris.
I switched to Linux a year and a half ago. I would have switched
sooned but there were problems with the SCSI support for my machine.
I had friends running Linux in 1993.
Why did I switch from DOS to Unix? To eliminate the need to deal with
Microsoft's tech support. BAck then it was really bad. I don't know
how it is now; I don't need it :-)
Yes, the Higher-Fire archive site is running Linux 1.2.8, and will
soon be upgrading to Linux 2.0.x -- just as soon as I get an 8 GB DAT
tape running on my SCSI port. The web server is from NCSA, and was
ftp-ed right off the internet for free. It compiled right out of the
tar file and installed in less than an hour. 3 cheers for Bro. Jerry
Caesar for setting this up. BTW he is co-sysop around here, and can
be reached at jerry@eli.wariat.org.
