Lotus Chicken:
Don't you *dare* try to cross the road the same way we do !
I believe that Lotus lost the appeal to this one. The defendent was
VP Planner, a spreadsheet with a macro front-end allowing it to be
configured to respond to whatever set of commands you liked. It cam
with a Lotus compatibility suite. VP Planner, incidently, is written
in Forth. It is smaller than 123, and performs all the same functions
with comparable speed, plus it is configurable.
In a case that I was an expert witness for the defense, we claimed
that interfaces are not protectable intellectual property. The
Judge's instructions to the jury failed to point this out, and when
the case was appealed, the court's opinion explicitly stated that
interfaces were not protectable. See the client "Mnemonics" on my
resume at http://eli.wariat.org/~rj/resume/resume.html for details.
Thios turned out to be a precedent setting case because of this
reason.
