Agreed- during our Easter play, we had over 2800 people come in just three
days. There were people baptized in Jesus Name, and many, many came to
church afterward as a result. The Gospel was presented in a dramatic way.
I think most of us understand some of the pagan origins of things within our
culture. This should not be used as an excuse for the church NOT to
celebrate the two greatest events of history- God coming in flesh, and Jesus
death burial and resurrection.
There are many things in our culture that have 'pagan' origins. Pictures on
the wall originated as worship of dead ancestors in many cultures.
Figurines (such as Home Interiors) would have been considered idols during
much of history. Do our opponents of Christmas and Easter have pictures and
trinkets on their walls and shelves? And what about many of our customs
surrounding funerals and weddings?
Paul chastised the Athenians because they 'did not know what they
worshipped...' I think we fully understand what/who we worship, when we
celebrate these holidays. If we don't, then that is a deeper problem that
must be addressed :).
If I put up holly or a tree during the Christmas season, I promise that I
will not sing hymns, burn candles, or pray to it. I will use it as a
decoration to brighten my home during the cold, Winter months. But when it
comes to my worship and prayer, it will be the God that came in a human
body, and was laid in a manger.
