eli.wariat.org, the system that hosts the Higher-Fire Archives, will
be going down, probably tonight, for an operating system upgrade. If
all goes well, it should be back up tomorow, but if you don't see it,
pray for me, because it means the upgrade was harder than I thought:-)
I am upgrading from Linux 1.2.8 to Linux 2.0.19 to solve a problem
with sockets. Due mainly to the increased web traffic here, the
system has been running out of TCP sockets. Under Linux 1.2.8, these
sockets are staticly allocated in the kernel, so ther is only a fixed
number of them. In linux 2.0.19, the sockets are dynamically created
as they are needed, so you can't run out until you are out of memory,
which is a problem I do not expect to see, since I just upped the RAM
from 32 MB to 128 MB.
I also installed a DAT tape drive which can hold up to 8 GB of data on
a single tape. Previously I was backing up on DC-6250 QIC tape
cartridges, which only hold 250 MB each. For the 5 GB of disk on
eli.wariat.org, that means 20 tapes. YUK! Now that I can easily back
up the system, I am more willing to try something drastic like a
kernel upgrade.
