I have heard that the "tree worshipping" was originated in Germany (my
ancestors). That's also where the song "O Christmas Tree" comes from. I
believe it's "O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum", something like that. Sister
Doris can set me straight if I am wrong. My grandma used to sing it.
The scripture I can give you is:
Jeremiah 10: 1-5
1. Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of
Israel:
2. Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be
not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are
dismayed at them.
3. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree
out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with
the ax.
4. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with
nails and with hammers, that it move not.
5. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must
needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them;
or they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
After I read this, I became a bit convicted. At first I would buy a
smaller "live" tree and put red and white checked bows and some green
and popcorn, etc. Everything but silver and gold (looking a little
sheepish here). And I have never worshipped it - at least that's what I
thought he-he. Then I remembered all those times I had turned off the
lights in the house and turned on the lights on the tree and just sat
there and stared at it. Was I worshiping it? I don't know, maybe a form
of worship??
Anyway, I don't have a problem with any of you having a tree, I
still enjoy seeing them at Christmas. I just wanted to share my
experience with y'all and see if anyone else has had any similar
experiences and what you think of the scripture in Jeremiah.
Love in Jesus,
