I think the exchange seen recently, here on H-F, would haven't
come across so strange and hit the high notes of emotions so
quickly had there been a few more smiley's and winkies placed
in the text.

Email is such a sterile environment.  We can't see the expression
on the others face while they are composing the piece of email that
is about to be distributed to about 150 emailboxes around this 
world.  We can't tell if you laughing, grinning, smiling, winking,
or about any other emotion that is common during normal face-2-face
conversation.  And especially if we've just recently joined the
list and we're not familiar with other's writing styles, personalities,
and idiosynchrasies.

Being as we don't have visual links on the net to see each other's
faces while it's a happening (like a visual phone) then it's probably
a good idea to get familiar with the various kinds of smileys and 
winkies.  I'm not asking ya'll to commit this entire list to memory,
but I hope you'd get the idea...  :-)

It's more of a courtesy to others letting them have a better
clue about your frame of mind when you're composing a letter 
that others will be reading.
