The trouble with IRC is that it does not normally leave an audit
trail, whereas email does.  If people are using Unix and X11, they can
run irc in an xterm window with loggin enabled so that everything that
appears in the xterm window gets written to a file as well.  This is
still a mess, since irc uses "curses" (the Unix terminal escape code
package, so named because when these funny character sequences are
printed out, they look like comic characters cursing) to control the
display, so one still needs to write a filter to clean it up, but it
should at least be possible.  Has anyone already written such a
filter?
