>>>>> "Mark" == Mark G Strahan <ac928@rgfn.epcc.Edu> writes:

Mark> The basic text is from Psalm 51 where David says, behold,
Mark> thou desirest truth in the inward parts and in the hidden
Mark> part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

Psalms 51:6 Behold, thou desirest <02654> (8804) truth <0571> in the inward
parts <02910>: and in the hidden <05640> (8803) [part] thou shalt make
me to know <03045> (8686) wisdom <02451>.

[The <*> are Strong's Concordance word numbers.]

The phrase "in the inward parts" comes to us via the Hebrew word whose
number is <02910>:

      02910 tuwchah {too-khaw'}

from 02909 (or 02902) in the sense of overlaying; TWOT - 795b; n f pl

      AV - inward parts 2; 2

      1) inner regions, hidden recesses, inward parts

So the emphasis is on being hidden from open view...

Which comes from 02909:

      02909 tachah {taw-khaw'}

      a primitive root; TWOT - 800; v

      AV - bowshot + 07198 1; 1

      1) to hurl, shoot
         1a) (Piel) a bowshot (participle)

...and yet not too far away...

 and 02902:

      02902 tuwach {too'-akh}

      a primitive root; TWOT - 795; v

      AV - daub 7, plaister 3, shut 1, overlay 1; 12

      1) to spread over, overlay, plaster, cover over, coat, besmear
1a) (Qal) to overspread, coat, overlay
1b) (Niphal) to be coated, be plastered
      2) (Qal) to be besmeared

...again, the idea of "hidden" in the sense of "inward parts" is in
the sense of being hidden because it is covered up -- like Watergate
-- it was hidden for the very reason that the doer of the deed knows
that it is wrong.

All this is augmented by "in the hidden <05640> (8803) [part]":

      05640 catham {saw-tham'} or satham (Nu 24:15) {saw-tham'}

      a primitive root; TWOT - 1550; v

      AV - stop 8, shut up 2, hidden 1, shut out 1, secret 1, close up 1; 14

      1) to stop up, shut up, keep close
         1a) (Qal)
             1a1) to stop up
1a2) to shut up, keep close
             1a3) secret (participle)
1b) (Niphal) to be stopped up
         1c) (Piel) to stop up

      08803 Stem - Qal See 08851
Mood - Participle Passive See 08815
            Count - 1415

The repitition reinforces the idea of "hidden" by using a different
word, "catham", to add the idea that it is a secret that is being
hidden, and that it needs to be "sopped up", or blocked -- its
existence, the flowing thereof, must cease. So the hidden act must
cease to be commited, and its prior commisions must be kept secret and
hidden from view.

Boy, does that ever sound like "atonement" to me!

The blood is the covering -- the plastering over -- the hiding -- of
our sin, our evil acts we once commited. But we must cease to commit
them; their flowing out of us as actions must come to an end, and the
fact that we ever did them must be made a secret, and kept a secret.

Oh, for the atoning blood of Jesus:

"What can take away our sins?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!"

When Jesus looks at us at the Great White Throne Judgement, all he
will say is "I see a crimson stream of blood that flows from Calvary".
He will not see our sins, for they have ceased to flow from us, for we
have ceased to commit them. The knowledge of them has been hidden
under his bloodstains that cover us. All he can see is his own blood.
He cannot see our guilt, because it is hidden from him by that
precious blood -- that innocent blood.

Now for the *REALLY* neat part: He is perfect. He has perfect
knowledge. If he has no knowledge of something, then that thing does
not exist. If he has no knowledge of our sin, the our sin does not
exist. It never existed, for it has been erased from a memory that
transcends time itself, for it is the memory of the one who created
time. Our sin is totally gone. If we still remember our own sin,
then our memory is playing tricks on us. There is no such sin. That
was in another plane of existence. Our memory is playing tricks on
us, for he would say, if we asked him about our old sins, "What sins
are you talking about?" They are gone! They do not exist, not even
in the one perfect memory. That's remission of sins, and it only come
by his blood and in his name, both applied to our lives through water
baptism by total immersion in the name of Jesus, for the remission of
sins.

Forgiveness is accomplished at repentence, and even though some of go
on and get baptized, as the scriptures say, we do not really
understand what is being accomplished by that act. That act is "for
the remission of sins". It erases our sins from all of time and space
and eternity.

But if we go on after that and sin again, then the flow of the act has
not been stopped up, and it will break through all of this wonderful
blood covering and atonement, and we are once again covered with sin,
and totally unacceptable to appear before the King. We are no longer
wearing the wedding garment of spotless white linen without wrinkle.
It looks more like we just changed the main and rod bearings of our
car in that white garment. It is filthy rags now!

What to do? What to do? Back to the altar of repentence and make a
sacrifice:

 1. I beseech <3870> (5719) you <5209> therefore <3767>, brethren
<80>, by <1223> the mercies <3628> of God <2316>, that ye present
<3936> (5658) your <5216> bodies <4983> a living <2198> (5723)
sacrifice <2378>, holy <40>, acceptable <2101> unto God <2316>, [which
is] your <5216> reasonable <3050> service <2999>.

Is anything else needed? Well, the same as before, we must cease to
permit these works to flow from us. They must be stopped up.

 1. Wherefore <5105> seeing we <2249> also <2532> are <2192> (5723)
compassed about <4029> (5740) <2254> with so great <5118> a cloud
<3509> of witnesses <3144>, let <659> (0) us <2249> lay aside <659>
(5642) every <3956> weight <3591>, and <2532> the sin <266> which doth
so easily beset <2139> [us], and let us run <5143> (5725) with <1223>
patience <5281> the race <73> that is set before <4295> (5740) us
<2254>,

Why doth that sin so easily beset us? Because it is plastered over
and covered up, but it is still no more than a bowshot away. It is
ever threatening, but OUR sin is only threatening to US, as WE are the
only ones with the power to control it:

32 And <2532> the spirits <4151> of the prophets <4396> are subject
<5293> (5743) to the prophets <4396>.

Thank you bro. Strahan for your excellent study on the inward parts.
It has truly both blessed and inspired me. In diggin into this
further, I just wanted to share the word study with the rest of the
memners of the list.
