I can decode MIME, though reading MSW documents would require a little
extra effort (forwarding the mail to a base64-encoding capable reader
on another machine, saving the attached file, ftp'ing that file to the
Novell file server here, then booting up windows on the PC next to me
and reading it using that).

specific to the mail program the person is using, perhaps containing
some sort of additional formatting information. It's a nuisance, but
from what I understand it's either impossible or unknown how to turn
this feature off.
