I was really supprised last week. We had already started this thread
of discussion. I was searching the web with the Alta Vista search
engine for some technical information. One of the hits it gave me
looked particularly good from the 25 word or so excerpt associated
with the title. So I pointed and I clicked.
Bear in mind that I have been active on the internet for the past 4
years. I have run my own site for 3 1/2 of them, first as a uucp node
handling mail, news, and uucp file transfers, and for the past 1 3/4
years as a full fledged internet server. I have never experienced
anything like this before.
There I was, sitting in front of a workstation at a client's site.
They know that I am a UPC minister. They respect my both technically
and spiritually. I thought for a while that the Vice President and
his family were going to come into the truth, as they may yet.
So after the mouse click, there was that brief pause while waiting for
the screen to paint, and then I about passed out! A naked lady was
beginning to appear on my screen!
What had happened was that someone had layed a trap! This particular
web page did indeed have excellent information on exactly the topic I
was searching for, but at the top of the page was a "supermodel"
photograph, and a different one at the bottom of the page. Between
the two lewd photographs was the information I was searching for.
I can imagine the laugh the sinner who put that page together had just
thinking about who all would be suprised by his little trick. The
funny point is, he himself will never know who hit the page. He will
never see their shocked faces. His entire thrill comes from his own
imagination about what could happen.
Isn't this the same kind of thrill porno users experience? That
person whose photograph they are looking at will never see them
looking at it. Their whole enjoyment is restricted to their own
imagination -- to their "chambers of imagry".
But imagine my suprise and then concern: what would my client have
thought if he had walk by at that moment and seen a naked woman on my
workstation screen? What would he have thought of my ministry? Of my
church?
Of course, I quickly scrolled past the photography and into the
technical information, which was indeed exactly what I had been
looking for. I just wish it had not been presented in the manner that
it was . :-(
