It seems that of all the messages I have preached, that the ones that
paint a graphic picture of Jesus on the cross, his suffering, the way
he was treated, and especially: why he did it, these sermons seem to
always reach people, saint and sinner alike. I was just the organist
a few months ago when another saint and friend of mine was teaching
our weekly Tuesday night Bible study lesson in a local nursing home.
He was teaching the lesson in "Exploring God's Word" where Christ was
arrested, tried, and crucified. One elderly gentleman was a stroke
victim, who because of his condition finds it hard to talk or show
much facial expression. He frequently sits there with his head jutting
forward, his mouth open, and sometimes drools.
When Bro. Doug got to the part when the cross was raised from the
horizontal position to the vertical position, the part where Jesus was
jerked into the crucifixion position, as the post of the cross was
dropped into the hole that held it, and the blood spurted out around
the nail holes, and the pain wracked his tortured body, well this old
man burst into tears of compassion and empathy for what our Lord went
through.
We must never forget the cross, and we must never forget the preaching
of the cross, for it will reach a sinner or backslider whne nothing
else will.
