Nothing fishy about it - thats just the way they believe.
You and I did not have them pray over the water before we were
baptized in Jesus' name, so we are in a more general category, having
to rely on the power of the gospel, and the name of the Lord alone to
save.
I appreciate the fact that, when they preach the message, they do get
it real straight - but, organizationally, we have a few differences.
In their sub-culture, I think they are doing an excellent job, and I
used to enjoy hearing S McDowell Shelton, father of the present
overseer and originator of the present dynasty, on WWV out of Wheeling
WV. around the time that Harvestime was broadcast. I have heard from a
number of old-timers that Shelton could not put it across the way S.C.
Johnson could. Since then we have heard much good preaching from
Bishop Randolf Goodwin from the Bronx, and have become familliar with
and fond of the writing of Elder Lawson, deceased.
It is true that we have recently, through IRC, met an elder who was
associated with S.C. Johnson. He heard the gospel from S.C. Johnson in
the early 50's as I understand, and was New York Youth Secretary when
Shelton was National Youth Secretary. In spite of the different worlds
we walk in, and the difficulty we have in understanding attitudes
expressed in some organization, I deeply respect some of these men.
Others, it turns out, were in it only for personal glory. But that is
true in our own movement
Someone said Pentecost is a funny thing.... I'm glad that God is in
it! If it was only man and his religion, these oddities would have no
redeeming glory, but with the Lord of Heaven and earth working among
men and women, I expect to see things and see things new every day,
and go on smiling and worshipping awaiting the full revelation of His
glory at His coming.
