Richard> Mark 2:26 says it's lawful only for priests to eat the
Richard> shewbread. But in 1 Samuel 21:2-7, the priest Ahimelech
Richard> told David that the only restriction in eating the
Richard> shewbread was that the men have kept themselves from
    Richard> women.

I have prepared a message call "The man in the middle" that uses the
story of David and the shewbread as the text, along with the passage
in Genesis where Abram meets Melchizedek. I also bring in Paul's
account of Melchizedek in Hebrews, and finish with the burial
preparations for Jesus, and his triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

The idea is to show that Melchizedek was both king and priest. The
law mandated only Levites to be priests, and they could not be kings.
Melchizedek was the King of Salem, whic is to say the King of Peace.
Jesus rode into Jerusalem on an ass -- the animal of peace. His entry
was the entry of a king. Thus he was the King of Peace. He was also
a priest, and the high priest, even the priest of priests as well as a
king and the king of kings. So Jesus was both king and priest.

The behavior of David in eating the shewbread after being annointed to
be king was foreshadowing the time when *THE MAN* Christ Jesus was to
be both king and priest. Thus David was the man in the middle -- the
middle of Melchizedek and Jesus. *THE MAN* Christ Jesus is the man in
the middle -- the middle of humanity and deity. He is our mediator,
the one who stands between our sin and our God and Judge. His blood
covers our sins, and thereby we may approach the throne boldy!
Hallelujah!

Someday I will preach this, when the LORD gives me liberty.
