This was spam sent to just about everyone who's ever posted anywhere
to Usenet. It was not a selected list as was claimed in the message.
I didn't receive one myself, though I know of several people who had.

The discussion in the abuse newsgroups is that this "Steve Barnard" guy
almost certainly did not send this spam, but that someone did so in an
attempt to harass him. This quite likely is the guy's real address,
and his phone number is listed.

The spam came from AOL, and AOL is cooperating with the FBI in
determining precisely who sent the email message. According to
press reports, AOL has determined that the email did come from the
Queens area of New York City. You can find out more at

Another chain letter going around that might be of interest to members
of H-F is one regarding Stephen Ames, Donna Stoll, and Ms Stoll's
daughter Shaneena. The letter claims the state of Pennsylvania has
taken Shaneena away from from Mr Ames and Ms Stoll (who are married),
and placed her in the custody of one Richard Medellin. Several judges
and attorneys are mentioned. They claim they are being persecuted for
their religious and political beliefs.

My first reaction on reading the message: "It looks a lot like a nasty
custody battle."

The straight scoop: Richard Medellin is Shaneena's father/Stoll's
ex-husband. Medellin and Stoll had joint custody. Stoll pulled her
daughter out of school and began home-schooling her daughter. Medellin
objected and sued for full custody of his daughter. At the court
hearing, Ms Stoll apparently acted like a lunatic, completely refusing
to answer questioning from the judge and was found in contempt of
court. Mr Ames (Stoll's husband) actually had to be bodily ejected
from the courtroom for his behavior. The judge, seeing Stoll's and
Ames' behavior, found in favor of Mr Medellin. The Bible or the
Constitution was not mentioned in the court hearing.

Ames and Stoll probably believe what they are saying, i.e. that they
are being persecuted by the state for their religious and political
beliefs. The facts don't bear this out, however. They seem to be the
type of people who talk about martians listening in on their phone
conversations and such. *twilight zone music*
