I have been talking (by means of IRC) to a gentleman who attends the
church where Dean is supposed to be assistant pastor. The pastor has a
name that is very well known in the UPC. The man I talk to has a long
background and family in the faith also. Seems that the last few years
have been difficult.
The conversations that I have with him lead me to wonder how they have
determined to stay associated with the UPC as long as they have. There
is virtually no passing conversation that doesnt mention how
unscriptural and backward the organization as a whole is.
The big excitement was that Dan Dean and the musicians (PC&D) had
played a Promise Keepers Rally within the last week.. There was a man
with us on the channel who was a promise keepers advocate. When I
asked how the man KNEW that his cousin had received the Holy Ghost at
the rally, the man from Dean's church became very irritated. He and
another "saint" joined the man in berating me for being to dogmatic,
judgemental, and trying to spell things out in black & white too much.
He had said I was legalistic over many things. I suggested that he was
legalistic about only some selected scriptures and inquired whether
Acts 2:38 was still one of them. His response was that he thought the
Holy Ghost was a needful experience. I examined fiurther and am pretty
confident that the name of the Lord was neglected in that answer on
purpose.
There was another person there arguing against me.. seems like as a
matter of course. One of her statements: "Well, I can tell you, I'll
NEVER wear my hair in a bun" :) (as though I care, or anyone asked
about where she put her hair), seemed to wrap it up. I can't help but
notice the emphasis this person put on music. She did not want me to
talk about doctrine, but became notably irritated when there was any
suggestion of music not being able to save a soul.
The whole music thing is so bizzare, sometimes... theres no doubt that
its an area open to enourmous spiritual battles.
Does anyone know how much part music has played in the 14 or so
instances now since 1992 in which over 3000 have received the Holy
Ghost in one place, around the world ?
