Thanks for all the suggestions from everyone.

I rented a chainsaw last night, set up some flood lights, and went to
town.  I got the alley and neighbor's driveway cleared and many of the
smaller limbs chopped off.  Some friends and co-workers are coming out
this weekend to help finish the job off.

I do have a big wood-burning stove in my house, but I currently don't
use it because the chimney is in such poor shape.  I considered lining
the chimney myself, but I nearly killed myself on my steep-pitch slate
roof (caught the rain gutter at the last moment as I went sliding down
*wheeeeeee*).  So we called some professional chimney services a couple
of years ago, but they wanted a ton of money because they would require
special equipment because of the steep-pitch slate roof.
