Is anybody else confused?

I too rush  in where angels fear to tread (in the computer realm).
I would love to install some alternate OS's and have been combing the
internet for information.
Alas I do not have a tape backup and am not likely to get one in near
future, seeing we just went in debt for new vehicles .
I have had an idea though,  (light bulb going off above head <g>)
What if I copy the stuff I dont have backed up, as it it is to large for a
floppy, to my husbands HD via our network hookup (I have his HD, desk top,
and CD shared and on my desk top). 
That way if I lose it I can restore providing I can keep my network link
good.
Since he is the administrator this should be on his PC 's permissions and
not mine .
Right?
Is this a valid option or is there fault in my logic?
BTW he does have his own modem and net access.
Hope this make some sort of sense as eye I am getting the red glaze in my
eyes about now.
