me: The job is not always what it is "cracked" up to be (whatever that
old saying means). I have been struggling with the old Gateway P5-60
for the last couple of years, but ever since I bought a Pentium 166
for home it seemed even slower. I decided to purchase this neat little
computer toy while I still have the authority to make capital expenditure
decisions. We recently got the "word" that our bank holding company (owns
seven separate bank units in the region totaling less about $500Milllion
in assets) is going to be acquired by a $1.7Billion (with a B :-) ) bank
holding company. Many banks will be merged into larger banks and
made into branch offices, several existing branch offices will be closed
and *undoubtedly* many jobs/positions will be consolidated. We expect
this merger will be finalized in the Spring of 1998. I suspect I will be
retained as a branch/office/division manager at a considerable cut in pay
and benefits, but it is too early in the process for any specifics as to
personnel or branch closings. I "sort of" feel like old Jed (the computer
programmer) > Now the moral of the story is listen to what you're told,
> Companies will use you and discard you when you're old.
> So gather up your friends and start up your own firm,
> Beat the competition, and watch the bosses squirm < , except I
am only 42 (that may seem old to some of you :-) .
There is no such thing as job security in these changing times
(even for bank Presidents). Thank God my trust is not in the
things of this world. My sincere prayer is for God's will in my life.
I am not fretting about it. There are much more important things in my
life (Jesus, my family, my church) than the job/position. I am trusting Him
to work all things for the good of our family. In the meantime I will enjoy

my new "computer toy" for as long as the Lord allows.
