YES!  That is CORRECT!  SPACEWAR was the game I was looking for.  I
played it on a PDP-12 at Duke in 1969.  Boy was it fun!  Joysticks,
firing buttons, and a real live human opponent.  (Conway's "Life" is
not really a game, since there is no way to win or loose, and no
opponent.)
