With two switches that can be toggled on and off,
these are the possibilities:

         switch A  B      o == on        x == off

     result 1-  o  o
            2-  o  x
            3-  x  o
            4-  x  x       or 2**2 distinctive results (2 squared)

With three switches, these are the possibilities:

         switch A  B  C   o == on        x == off

     result 1-  o  o  o
            2-  o  o  x
            3-  o  x  o
            4-  o  x  x
            5-  x  o  o
            6-  x  o  x
            7-  x  x  o
            8-  x  x  x   or 2**3 distinctive results (2 cubed)
