SATAN
It is true, the earliest mention of the adversary of all good by the
name Satan occurs in the book of Job. Job was within the same genaral time
slot as Abraham, and was, therefore, somewhere in the 2000 BC era.
However, the adversary of all good, was in existance and doing his
dirty work long before that time-- even in the Garden of Eden. He was
referred to at that time as the "serpent" which beguiled Eve by telling the
first lie recorded in the Bible, "Thou shalt not surely die."
Some scriptures which reveal his existence and workings are known,
though they seem to be written about earthly kings. They tell us where Satan
came from, and how he got where he is today.
Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of
God shouted for joy? Job 1:6 tells us that satan knew his former place
among the Sons of God, and came before God in the midst of them, though he
had lost his official place among them through rebellion against his Creator.
Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the
morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the
nations! Isaiah 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into
heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon
the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend
above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou
shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
Lucifer (light bearer) had formerly held a special place among the
Celestial beings known as the Sons Of God.
Ezekiel 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every
precious stone [was] thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the
beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the
carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was
prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou [art] the anointed
cherub that covereth; and I have set thee [so]: thou wast upon the holy
mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of
fire. Thou [wast] perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created,
till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they
have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore
I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy
thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart
was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason
of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before
kings, that they may behold thee. Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the
multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffic; therefore will
I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will
bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou
shalt be a terror, and never [shalt] thou [be] any more.
Jesus said that He had seen it when Satan was cast out of Heaven.
Luke 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from
heaven.
In the final book of the Bible, we glean a bit more information about
what happened whe the devil was cast out of Heaven. It would seem that he
had been joined by about a third of the created angelic beings in his
uprising against the Creator of all things, for he took about a third of them
with him when he was cast out.
Revelation 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of
heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman
which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was
born.
