Yeah... but, with the ICQ groupware server, you can control who
you let on the chat. With an IRC server you're open to the world.
But then again, I guess a good admin with IRC can keep anybody
out that he/she desires. I don't know much of that particular
means of communications on the 'net.
I downloaded the ircd rpm package from redhat.com and installed it
in all of about two minutes time on my machine behind the firewall
here at mcp.com. Then after I installed it, I started it the first
time and it's able to accept connections on our intranet. The good thing
about it, any IRC client can connect to it from behind the firewall here
so that you don't need the ICQ groupware client to communicate.
After I started it, and connected to it, it said that a message of the
day file was missing (the IRC client on another machine from the other
side of my desk) ... so I made an "ircd.motd" file in the same directory
of the daemon binary and it worked! I then had to personalize it so
that's its a little friendly.
