I was just teasing about the 1812 thing. The real reason is that churches
and ministers all over the country felt that as a nation we should express
our thankfulness to God for His blessings and the government proclaimed a
national day of Thanksgiving.
If such a request were brought to our government now, I doubt little would
come of it.
