Think About This One

<Attorney General Janet Reno,
< "A cultist is one who has a strong belief in the Bible and the Second
<Coming of Christ; who frequently attends Bible studies; who has a high level
< of financial giving to a Christian cause; who home schools for their
< children; who has accumulated survival foods and has a strong belief in the
< Second Amendment; and who distrusts big government. Any of these may
qualify
< a person as a cultist but certainly more than one of these would cause us
to
< look at this person as a threat, and his family as being in a risk
situation
< that qualified for government interference."
< Janet Reno, Attn.. Gen., USA
< Interview on 60 Minutes, June 26, 1994
Howdy all,
Just a reminder that I'm still off of the list, but I saw this one
because I saw the bounce.
The Janet Reno "quote" above is false. She has never appeared on
60 minutes, and she has never made the statement above.
The quote first appeared in 1994 in a "Christian" newsletter right here
in Illinois. It spread via militia and "patriot" newsletters, and last
month finally made it to a fairly prominent and credible Christian news
journal, which immediately printed a retraction after they bothered to
do some fact checking. I read an excellent debunking in Salt Lake
City's newspaper recently (don't have the URL handy, but you can find
it if you're interested).
I debunked this earlier amongst a different group, and was immediately
taken to task for debunking the false quote. The logic was a bit
twisted, something along the lines that it doesn't matter what the
facts are, because Reno is evil, and every falsehood and lie that we
can use against her is surely justified. This came from a fellow
Apostolic brother :-( I'm sure we become really credible when we fall
and use the devil's tactics against people.
Anyway, I hope you all don't too much mind my admonition that
Christians shouldn't gossip, slander, lie, and spread false rumors.
In summary: Janet Reno never said that "Bible believers" are cultists,
and I'm completely against Christians using the Devil's devices to
promote their version of what they think Christian society should be.

And now for personal stuff from me :-) My family and I had a wonderful
vacation in Colorado. We stayed with my mother-in-law and her husband
in Colorado Springs, and visited Bro Ed Cantu's church in Monument.
They are building a church in some beautiful country. Bro Cantu, who
manages the "pain-mail" department at Focus on the Family, is building
a church in some very beautiful country. We also visited Focus and were
mightily impressed.
We took Amtrak there -- what an experience! I highly recommend it for
anybody and everybody if you can afford a sleeper car. Coach would be
fine also, I'm sure, though that might be difficult if you have
children. My son did break his foot :-(, but he's out of the cast now
and all better.
PRAYER REQUESTS: My wife's stepmother Cora last weekend had a liver
transplant at Baylor's transplant center in Dallas TX. Please pray for
her complete healing and eventual spritual rebirth. Some of you may
recall her miraculous recovery from the brink of death just last
spring.
Pray also for our week of revival services here in Champaign Illinois.
My mother is visiting from Japan; she's been to a Pentecostal altar
before where the Lord touched her heart, so now she's avoiding church
:-( go figure.
Thank you and Lord bless you all!
