a Biblical Reconstructionist and a Philosopher

Grace and Peace in Jesus Name,
I was just wondering if any one out there had heard of a belife
called 'Biblical Reconstuctionism.'
I learned about this theory yesterday when I managed to get into a
conversation between the Preisdent of the Inver-Varsity Christian
Fellowship(I guess that just another campus Christian group), and one of
that group's members. This official it appears is a philosophy major and
was arguing that Christians should learn philosophy to convert
interlectuals. He also took the chance to claim that theology is a form of
philosphy which is (in his opinion) a major part of Christianity.
Ofcourse, I took the chance to claim that Christianity works fine
without theology (after all Apostolics don't have much theology and we
don't miss it). I also cited the belife in the Trinity as example of a
philosophical construct which hardly any one understands, and suggested
that philosophy make Christianity a mess.
Suprisingly, they had no trouble agreeing about the Trinity (is
that the kind of common ground steve was talking about.)
Anyways, as the conversation went on. The other guy began tell me
his theology. It seems that he is Presbyterian (well versed in the
writtings of John Calvin) and a 'Biblical Reconstructionist.'
It seems that he thinks Christians should work to gain control of
the world's governments. I decided it would be diplomatic to tell him
that this sounds very much like working to put the anti-Christ in power.
I did point out him scriptures concerning the government and sword of
capital punishment in Romans (yes, the pagan Roman Empire was in God's
mind given the sword of government.)
His point of view was confusing in that he saw government as it
now exists as benovolent. He also looked back with fondness on the time
when the Pope ruled with the inquestion.
His philosoph if you like sounded very threatening to the UPC
because our survival in countries like Russia and Indonisia and Ethiopia
has thus far depended on that fact our Preachers tell their congregation
to obey the government as it exists. It is also a clear attack on the
belife that God will protect his people in a direct miraculous way. That
is to say, faith in Government in incompatable with for miracles. Worse,
it challenges the basic prinicle that faith is individual choice not a
matter of government (a clearl fact from scripture.)
Given his strong opposition to the idea of free will, the last
point may be exaclty his intention.
Don't be confused he was not calling for Christian concern with
politicts. But he was calling for an end to freedom of religion!
Ofcourse, I don't know if he is a typical adherent to this
philosphy, or a voice of his own. I don't even know if how many of these
millitants there are.
I was just wondering if anyone out there knows anything about
these Biblical Reconstructions.
