Elf vs Coff

Hi all,

I often see references to Elf object format as target for various GCC cross 
compilers. I am currently using a GCC cross compiler for M68K that produces 
coff format.
Why would I be interested in Elf object format?
What does it provide that is different to coff?
Does current GCC (ECGS) support M68K-ELF?
