cross compiler

Hi:
I'm a newer in this field,so pls forgive me to ask this question:
It seems that whenever a embedded,realtime project are considered,a "cross
compiler" is to be built.I get a little from some place that the "configure"
command is used to build GCC for this .
are there any introduction information about this available? any
recommandation will be appreciated.
