M68K ELF Target

We are currently trying to generate a cross-compiler for Motorola 68k 
processors with the ELF object code format. We are using GCC 2.8.1, Binutils 
2.9.1.

Is there any simple way to do this apart from porting GCC to a new target?

If the answer is no, is it possible to generate a coff compiler and the use 
objcopy to copy from coff to ELF without loosing any vital information 
necessary for ELF?
