Spiritual Limnology

``Limnology'' is the study of bodies of water. In Heaven we have the crystal sea:

Re 4:6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, [were] four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

And the river of water of life:

Ez 47:1 ¶Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar.

2 Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side.

3 And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles.

4 Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins.

5 Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.

Re 22:1 ¶And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

In Hell we have the lake of fire:

Re 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

In the days of Abraham we have Sodom on the southern tip of the dead sea, called the ``sea of salt'', being the seat of utmost wickedness, where Abram rescued Lot and met with Melchizedek and paid tithes and had comunion. [Ge ch 14] Later, Sodom was destroyed and Lot's wife was turned to a pillar of salt. [Ge ch 19] There is even unto this day the monument to Lot's wife:

Ge 19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Jebel Usdum (Mount Sodom), a mountain of crystaline salt, 5 miles long and 300 feet high, along the southwestern shore of the Dead Sea, is so named from the belief that Sodom stood near it.25

Jesus was born in Galilee, and preached on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, a freshwater lake 696 feet below sea level.26

The Jordan River connects the Sea of Galilee with the Dead Sea. It carries fresh water southward from the Sea of Galilee into the Dead Sea.

The Jordan forms three lakes--Lake Huleh, 296 feet (90 meters) above sea level, the Sea of Galilee, 696 feet (212 meters) below sea level, ans the Dead Sea, 1,290 feet (585 meters) below sea level. The three once constituted a single landlocked lake near sea level. The complex was created by a geological fault extending from Syria to the Red Sea.27

The Dead Sea is a deep lake (about 1000 feet), and is the lowest place on the face of the earth.28 The city of Sodom is believed to lie beneath its waters.29 Perhaps this could be the source of the Atlantis myth:

At-lan-tis (at lan$'$ tis), n. a mythical island, first mentioned by Plato, said to have existed in the Atlantic Ocean west of Gibraltar and to have sunk finally into the sea.30

The Dead Sea is also the saltiest natural body of water on earth; parts of it are chemically saturated--they cannot possibly get any saltier.31 No animal can live in its salty waters for very long.

The Great Salt Lake is a large, shallow body of water (maximum depth is 27 feet) that is 4,200 feet above sea level. It is fed by the Jordan, Weber, and Bear rivers. It is several times saltier than sea water. The only animal that lives in its waters is Artemis Salina, the lowly little brine shrimp, an animal that reaches a maximum size of about $\frac{1}{2}$ inch.

The rivers that feed the Great Salt Lake are three in number. The Jordan is an obvious Biblical allusion; the Bear is an animal, the one that represents the invading forces in the last great battle in the Bible, and that represents the nation of Russia today; the Weber is a German word that derives from a ``weaver--one who weaves a web, or snare.''32 The Jordan River in Utah flows northwards from its headwaters of Lake Utah, a freshwater lake.

In parallel with the salt moutain of near the Dead Sea, there are the Bonneville Salt Flats west of the Great Salt Lake.

The Mediterranean Sea is an arm of the Atlantic ocean, but is almost landlocked. This results in it being at sea level, but somewhat saltier than the open ocean.33 It is divided into three deep pools connected by shallower water.34 If the water level were to go down 2,000 feet, it would result in three landlocked salt lakes. Due to its high evaporation rate and limited exchange of water with the open ocean, it was the first major body of water to suffer irreversible damage at the hand of man, and is today in danger of total eccological colapse.35

So we see that the important large natural bodies of water in the Bible were all salt water with the exception of the Sea of Galilee, which is pure fresh water. It was here that Jesus walked. The other bodies of water were increasingly salty in proportion to the wickedness of the cities and people located next to them, with Tyre being wicked, and Sodom so wicked it was totally destroyed.

Salt Lake City, Utah, is located on the southern end of the Great Salt Lake, in a position analogous to where Sodom was located on the Dead Sea. It is a thriving city of industry and hi tech research and development. Some of the leading computer companies in the world are located here. It is the headquarters of the Mormon Church.
